Green Jobs

In 2009, Workforce Florida collaborated with stakeholders throughout the state to define green jobs in a manner specific to the needs of Florida’s businesses, population and environment. Because green industries, such as renewable energy, are new and quickly evolving and because the jobs that incorporate green practices are so diverse, pinpointing a precise definition for green jobs has been a challenge for many states.

Workforce Florida recognized the importance of defining green jobs in order to grow and attract businesses, create and sustain jobs and secure Florida’s position as a global economic leader.

What is a green job?

“A green job increases the conservation and sustainability of natural resources for the benefit of Floridians. This includes jobs that reduce energy usage or lower carbon emissions, and protect Florida’s natural resources. Green jobs should provide worker-friendly conditions, pay sustainable wages and offer opportunities for continued skill training and career growth.”

With this definition as a foundation, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity has applied for federal-stimulus-backed grants to fund a statewide labor market survey to obtain data and input from Florida businesses on current green jobs and anticipated growth. Additionally, Workforce Florida is seeking additional discretionary funds through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act to provide training and skill development as needed in Florida.
